Is Athens Safe for Tourists?

Athens is safe for tourists in the main sightseeing areas. Pickpocketing occurs near the Acropolis, Monastiraki, and on the Metro. Stray dogs are harmless.

Athens is moderately safe for solo female travelers. It is recommended to stay in central, well-populated areas, especially after dark, and use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps.

Areas that require extra attention in Athens include: Omonia Square at night, Some parts of Exarchia. These are not necessarily dangerous but travelers should remain vigilant, especially at night.
