Days are spent hiking to the church from the town of Stepantsminda, trekking to the Gergeti Glacier, or driving up to the Juta Valley for even more remote alpine trails. The raw, powerful landscape is the absolute star.

Stepantsminda is the main village and the practical base for all visits, with a range of guesthouses and small hotels lining its few streets. The destination suits adventurous travelers, hikers, and photographers perfectly; it’s less ideal for those seeking nightlife or business amenities. Most visitors arrive via a three-hour shared taxi or minibus ride from Tbilisi, a journey that is an attraction in itself, passing the Ananuri Fortress and the dramatic Dariali Gorge.
